File Specifications For Movie Posters.

Review Bleed, Trim & Safety Areas

An image, indicating file specifications when printing booklets

Please ensure your file has the following dimensions when printing your movie posters:

  • Trim size 27” x 40”: The product currently selected in the configurator above on this page will be delivered in these dimensions.
  • Bleed size 27.20” x 40.20”: Include + 1/10" on all four sides. This is the bleed that will be trimmed. Extend background images and graphics beyond this area.
  • Safe Zone: Keep all text and key elements at least 1/12" from the trim edge to prevent being trimmed.

RGB vs CMYK

Use CMYK only. Files in RGB or with spot colors will be automatically converted, which may cause colors to appear different from the original file.

  • The total ink coverage (C+M+Y+K) must not exceed 300% to ensure proper drying and prevent pages from sticking.
  • For black or gray text, use only the K channel.

For a rich black, use 40C / 0M / 0Y / 100K or 60/40/40/100

Image Resolution - Avoid Blurry Images

Image resolution needs to be a minimum of 150 dpi (recommended 300 dpi) to ensure sharp, high-quality results. So avoid low-resolution or pixelated images.

Explore the Folding Options of Movie Posters

  • For single-sided posters, please contact us after placing your order to specify whether you’d like the fold to face inward (design inside) or outward (design outside). By default, posters are folded with the design inside.
  • Your design should account for the folding direction and sequence. Please refer to the layout preview in the product configurator.
  • Depending on the fold type, only 80 lb. to 120 lb. paper stocks are available.

Film Lamination

Film lamination (not to be confused with plastic pockets or sleeves) is bonded directly to your bulk movie posters to give them a protective layering. You can select between either matte or gloss film lamination.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to lamination:

  • Posters are trimmed after lamination, so the edges will not be sealed
  • Lamination adds durability and resistance to handling

Fonts

Use PostScript fonts for offset printing. If TrueType fonts are used, convert them to outlines (also known as paths or curves) to avoid rendering issues.

Save Your File Correctly

Export your artwork as PDF/X-3 for the best color accuracy and reliable printing results. Alternatively you can send us JPEG or TIFF files.

If you're using Adobe Photoshop, always save your files as JPEG or TIFF. If a Photoshop PDF is required, please use Acrobat Distiller to create the PDF (you may download our Acrobat JobOptions further down this page in the templates section).

Please never save a PDF directly from Photoshop.

Useful FAQs About Movie Posters.

What size (how big) are movie posters?

The official movie poster size (also known as the one-sheet) is 27" x 40". This is the standard format distributed to theaters and cinemas because it fits exactly into their light boxes. Common alternatives include 18" x 24" for smaller promotional displays and 24" x 36" for retail and framed wall art.

What are film posters used for in business marketing?

Film posters help cinemas, production studios, distributors, marketing agencies, and entertainment brands promote film releases, theatrical screenings, festival lineups, premieres, anniversary re-releases, and branded events. They also support merchandising, retail displays, and collector-focused campaigns built around classic and vintage movie posters.

Are movie posters suitable for theater and cinema displays?

Yes, our movie posters are printed in the official 27" x 40" one-sheet size, which is the standard format used in theater light boxes and cinema lobbies. Premium gloss and matte paper stocks deliver sharp color and crisp detail, making them ideal for both backlit displays and framed marketing in high-traffic venues.

Can movie posters be customized for different locations or campaigns?

Indeed, movie posters can be fully customized for specific theaters, cities, festivals, or audience segments. Studios and distributors often run multiple versions of the same artwork to highlight local screenings, opening dates, cast appearances, or regional partners. Variable artwork is ideal for targeted theatrical, retail, and event marketing across markets.

What paper type works best for movie posters?

Most movie posters are printed on premium gloss text stock, which delivers the rich, vibrant color associated with theatrical one-sheets. Matte stocks are popular for minimalist film posters, vintage reprints, and art-focused designs. For longer-lasting use in lobbies or retail, gloss or matte film lamination adds durability and resistance to handling.

Will my movie poster order automatically be mirrored on the back?

No. Posters are printed exactly as the uploaded file is provided. For the best contrast, we recommend mirroring the front design on the back page of your file before uploading. If you need assistance preparing your artwork, our support team will be happy to help.
